AFR #181 – Cruelly usual

I’ve always been bothered by the torture quest in Borean Tundra.  Largely because I’m bothered by torture (as every sane person should be), but also because it’s so insulting to be told: “We’re too good and pure to do something as pointlessly cruel as torture, but hey, you look like a person with no moral compass whatsoever!”  I like to think of my characters as being better than that.

Now, I know it’s all pixels and code and no actual torture of actual people is involved, but if pixels and code is all we care about then we should throw out all that extraneous “story” and “character” stuff and just play on spreadsheets.  Even when I’m not actively role-playing, I still like to feel like my characters have, you know, character, and while I’m okay with killing monsters who can fight back and present a threat to me and my people, I’m not okay with torturing helpless prisoners.  That’s not what heroes do.

  1. Honestly, with so much magic power available at that outpost, I was surprised with this quest. Could they not have just used a little bit of ‘Talk like a gossip’ powder in the fellow’s meal… and seen what interesting news came out?
The problem with torture, outside the moral issues, is that you tend to get a long of information that just isn’t true. When the goal is to stop the pain, you say whatever will stop the pain. Personally I had hoped we would get bad information out of that quest. Alas, it was not to be. *It would have been fun to have to fix things after getting bad info messed the situation up a bit!*

  2. This truly reminds me of the horde’s quest-line in Gilneas, specially the one in which you have to kill refugees and let the valkerie-like half-naked chick turn them into forsaken undead. I thought, “I am (or at least my character is) going straight to hell for this”.

  3. Yeah, I refused to do that quest. And folks wonder why I won’t play Horde (it’s not like they aren’t ten times worse or anything!!)

  4. And at the other end of the zone a DK gives you quests to retreive prisoners but reserves torturing them for himself. Just to keep the contrast strong.

  5. warcraft … is basically all dark … as allaince you serve a kingdom that is sent to kill happless engineers and craftsmen who were starved out and kill a man whos daughter is present.. … raid kingdoms belonging to orcs and taurens… and decimate the undead… lol and the list goes on… i wont bother with the horde side since it is parrelal…
