The friend who got my into WoW has a blacksmithing character and made me some really awesome stuff when I was gearing up my characters.  I was so impressed that I finally made one of my alts a blacksmith, only to discover that the experience of playing a blacksmith is one of constantly struggling to make gear that’s not quite good enough for you any more.  But maybe it’s just me; maybe I’m just really bad at blacksmithing.

  1. Ah, but when you level cap, THEN you can mine all the mats except that one to make gear that you can use for the first couple raids, but, of course, to get that one mat, you group up, have a 20% chance at winning it at the end of a dungeon, only to have the guy who already has 13 and can’t use them win it, but still, when you finally get it, you can finally make that piece of gear that’s super awesome, which, luck will have it, you replace in your first raid. (but only after gemming and enchanting it.) It’s a whole new frustration. 🙂

  2. Ugh, I’m wondering at the moment whether I should bother with Enchanting, as the gear I’m picking up is too high for me to disenchant for mats. So after spending most of my gold at the AH (buying out of course. No one bids these days ¬_¬), by the time I’ve raised the skills, I’ve already progressed onto the next level of gear – including my tailoring items – you can see a similar pattern at work XD. /rant

Methinks I should take a leaf out of LC’s book and cap first. Then farm the items I want…

  3. Crafting’s been badly thrown off by the new leveling. I rolled alchemy for my new shamans; blink once, they were level 20 and had to grind up the first 100 skill points. Blinked again and I was level 35, and missing another 50 points. I gave up and decided to just hold off until I was level capped.

    • You’re right! Buy game, Play to level, pay monthly fee to grind through end content, buy expansion, play to level, pay monthly fee, grind through end content, buy expansion…

      • Egad! How insidious!

  5. And this is why my main just mines and skins and sells the raw mats in the AH for you silly crafter types. But hey, my prices (for the mats I get for FREE) are way more reasonable than most sellers! 😉

Of course, then there’s that achievement about leveling five primary professions to max, so my alt became a herbalist/scribe… 😛

    • I know some people just gather like that, but I find that I just can’t enjoy playing a character without a crafting profession. In fact, I won’t start a new alt until I’ve figured out what his or her craft is going to be.
