AFR #199 – Life’s a beach

I just got my latest alt up through Uldum and the Harrison Jones quests.  I have mixed feelings on that whole questline.  On the one hand, I love the Indiana Jones riff and it’s clear that the devs let themselves go and had a blast designing it all.  On the other hand, it’s so annoying to be turned into a spectator instead of an actual participant in the events. It’s: push a button, watch a cutscene of Harrison Jones doing something awesome, kill some mobs, push another button, watch another cutscene of Harrison Jones doing something awesome, kill some more mobs, watch a cutscene of your character doing a Jar-Jar Binks impression, rinse and repeat.  But then it occurred to me that a questgiver who also goes and does all the quests for you could actually be pretty sweet.

  1. Uldum is just one giant cutscene….:D Reminded me of Kingdom Hearts 2, where you’d walk 2 steps, watch a cutscene, kill 1 mob, watch a cutscene, talk to Donald Duck, watch a cutscene…

    • That pretty much sounds like it.

  2. I love the ideas behind it, and the Indy homage… I just wish they had done things a slight bit differently. Watching your character (who has gone surfing on rockets, delved into the darkness of dealing with old gods, and basically done absolutely insane things) turn into a helpless baby in the cutscenes is not good storytelling. If they had made you have a nice fun romp instead of turning around and making you seem afraid or helpless every 5 minutes it would have been the best zone in the game (imo.)

      • I’m with you, Robert. If I had gotten to be the hero, I would have absolutely loved that questline. Instead I get stuck being the bumbling sidekick. No fun.

Glad you liked the strip, Ayshela. 🙂

  5. […] story also thoroughly undercut your character. Rather be the hero of your own story, you became Harrison Jones’s bumbling sidekick. All of the important story moments were up to him, while you were just there to do the grunt work. […]
