Midterm interlude

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — tabulacandida @ 9:35 PM

This has nothing to do with WoW, sorry, I just thought I’d share. I was giving exams today, which left me with free time on my hands and whiteboard to doodle on. I didn’t have a camera on hand, so here’s a few of my doodles reproduced with Paint.  Don’t worry, I’ll be back this weekend with the usual AFR comic.  See you then.

  1. Ren faire: Don’t ask for dead bodies, yours may be donated.
    Star Wars parody: *Mad cackling*
    Viking: Silly, Vikings want MEAD!
To sum things up: This has stimulated the muscles associated with movement of the lung matter to involuntarily produce a sound known as laughter. Is in not very logical. This was a ‘Data’ moment.
Thanks! It was enjoyable to read… and react to!

  2. Ren Faire near me is Elizabethan – ie, post-discovery-of-turkeys. Actually, is any part of the Rennaissance really pre-1493?

It’s also hard to say any costume is inapposite to some Shakespearean play, and if Shakespeare’s allowed, why not every other author?

  3. (I looked it up – it’s 14th to 17th centuries, which means [mid-to-late] 1300s to 1600s – I always get XXth century and YY00s mixed up – so Italian Renaissance began as much as 150 years before the Age of Exploration and thus turkeys being known in Europe. They were not introduced to Europe until 1550, but that is still before Elizabeth took her throne, which is approximately when the English Renaissance began.)

(Hey, he’s being pedantic, I get to be pedantic!)

    • Hooray for historical accuracy!

I actually know a group of SCA players who liked to serve popcorn at their events because their characters were based in the 1500s, so technically it was in-period for them. 🙂

  4. *giggle fits all over the place*

1: I have at least one SCA friend and lived with a couple of housemates who were cast members at the local RF, so I got a little over-exposed to costuming and the Faire. But mostly, that panel made me think of the criticisms of BBC’s Merlin. Someone was complaining about rotten tomatoes being thrown at Merlin in the stocks because they wouldn’t have existed in that time period in England. And all I could think was, “But you don’t have a problem with the DRAGON underneath the castle……riiiiiiight.” (Not to mention: legend, not history!)

2: I can’t speak for Chicago style, but I learned MLA as an English undergrad and then had to switch to APA for my psych grad program. Headache inducing!

    3: Just………*snerk*.

    • Yeah, I remember some fuss when the Lord of the Rings movies came out with a few people complaining that the hobbits shouldn’t have tomatoes to cook, never mind that Tolkien himself gave them potatoes, tobacco, and tea (oh, yeah, and fantasy world with elves and dragons and magic rings and such).
