AFR #253 – A little perspective

It amazes me that there are still some people out there complaining that the pandaren “don’t have any basis in lore” or “are just an April Fool’s joke.”  At this point in the game, the pandaren have a stronger place in the lore of Azeroth than even humans do.  They have a much richer backstory and a more complex culture than any other race in the game, and their culture and story are all there in the game for us to experience without having to read novels or comic books to understand it.

Now, that’s an entirely separate question from whether you like the pandaren or not.  You are completely free to like or dislike anything in the game and no one can tell you otherwise.  I’m not all that excited about the pandaren myself.  De gustibus non est disputandum and all that.  But no one can say that Blizzard has not done an amazing job of developing and realizing the pandaren as a race.

  1. We’re kind of bloated on races and even classes, at least from my point of view. Adding new ones just adds more balls/torches/chainsaws to the juggling act, and Blizzard doesn’t always handle keeping them all in the air that well. I’ve never minded the pandas, though, save for possibly the one who started preaching at me a few minutes after I arrived. Granted, he did redeem himself a little by punching Garrosh in the face in the 5.4 trailer though.

    • True, it really doesn’t feel like we have room for a new race or new class. We’ll see if Blizzard can surprise us in the next expansion.

  2. To say the Pandas do not belong in WoW is to deny that it is and has always been a silly cartoonish world. Those looking for a hardcore gritty world should have learned long ago to look elsewhere!
Heck, look at the recent villains in the story. You have Deathwing ’emo fail dragon!’, Garrosh ‘powertrip luls’, and the whole thunder king deal… he who died of old age but was brought back in his prime somehow!

    • That’ s by far the best description of Deathwing and Garrosh I’ve ever read.

  3. You left out the bit about being able to pull horses out of your bags and people mailing you dragons! 🙂

    • Dang straight!

    • TRUTH

(And I don’t even want to think about where my hunter pets go…)

  4. I love the Pandaren AND their lore. 😀 These past couple months that I’ve been on Pandaria is the first time since I started playing that I actually read the quest text to find out the whys and wherefores of what I’m asked to do and how it fits into the storyline I’m following (which brings up another thing I love about the expansion: having to complete storylines for the quest achievements, not just finish 100 random quests in the zone). And yes, when there are neon-pink-haired goblins and werewolves, there is room for pandas. People seriously need to stop over-thinking and just enjoy playing the game. Because it’s a GAME and you’re supposed to have FUN. Because it’s a GAME.

Speaking of pandas, I found this yesterday… My first thought: “This is the first time I’ve contemplated even considering the possible inkling of a glimmer of an idea of role-playing in WoW.” (I’ve never ventured into an RP server and I’m not sure how it all works.) My second, embarrassingly later (as in, it’s 4am the next day and I came straight here when I had it) thought: “THIZ WOULD LOVE THEM!”

    • BTW, AFR, did I ever share with you the song I made up when Nephew and I were questing on a Pandaren rogue pair?

      Comment by ButMadNNW — August 23, 2013 @ 6:13 AM

      • Ooh, share the panda song! Share the panda song! 😀

        Comment by wowafr — August 23, 2013 @ 6:45 AM

      • 😀 😀 😀

Okay, this happened when we leveled up our rogues enough to get mounts. And you know how the Pandaren turtle mounts waddle a bit as they go? Nephew is usually the leader of our pair, so I’ll hit auto-follow and let him take me to wherever the next quest is so my fingers can get a break. It amused the hell out of me (insane giggling, I’m tellin’ ya) to watch these two panda people lined up on their turtles, waddling across the countryside. And a joke about a turtle caravan eventually became this:

(to the tune of the Singing Telegram Girl’s song in Clue, more or less):
        We! are! a turtle caravan
        We travel round
        From town to town
And help out where we can!

I still haven’t managed to come up with a second verse…

        Comment by ButMadNNW — August 23, 2013 @ 5:24 PM

      • Oh, and for extra geekiness, I’ll mention that my rogue is named Demonsrun and Nephew’s is Whenagoodman. When Nephew has his own account, we’re thinking about trying to get his dad to be Goestowar. 😉

        Comment by ButMadNNW — August 23, 2013 @ 5:30 PM

      • I love it. I love all of it.

I’m trying to come up with another verse or two for the song. Give me some time…

    • It really is wonderful what people will do with their imaginations. I don’t really role-play in WoW, although I do like to give my characters some touch of personality. I have great admiration, though, for people who commit to it on that level.

      Comment by wowafr — August 23, 2013 @ 6:45 AM

      • Yeah, I have an idea in the back of my head of what my character is thinking during some cutscenes or events, but don’t put too much thought into it. But I think my bigger hesitation about trying RP is the time commitment I imagine it needing – knowing lore, being around when other people in the guild are, etc. It’s the same reason I’m not in a raid group or anything like that. (I am in a guild, but I need to shop for a new one; I’m usually the only one online and what’s the point of a guild if you can’t say, “Hey, anyone want to run [dungeon]?” or “Could someone give me a hand with this boss?”

But, dude. I could totally see Thizzible joining that all-panda guild. 😉

        Comment by ButMadNNW — August 23, 2013 @ 5:17 PM

      • Thizzible’s diary entry:

“Day 17 in the panda guild. They still suspect nothing, but this suit is really starting to chafe.”
