Involuntary hiatus

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — tabulacandida @ 6:45 PM

A couple of days ago I went to start up my computer in the morning and: nothing.  I’ve had computer crashes before, so I tried all the tricks I know.  Still nothing.  Telephone tech support wasn’t helpful.  My local computer repair service did their best, but it still didn’t help.  I finally found a place to send my computer to for repair, but it’s going to take a couple of weeks.

Now, I have a travel laptop that I can use to do critical things and I have backups of essential things like financial documents, but all my fun stuff is on that computer, all my AFR images and the text of Father’s Shield.  Until I get my main computer up and running again, I’m afraid AFR and Father’s Shield will have to go on hiatus.

I haven’t missed a comic since I started posting AFR weekly.  I’m proud of that.  You all keep coming back every week; the least I can do is have a new joke for you.  But there’s nothing I can do now but wait, and it’s frustrating.  I’m sorry.  I feel bad about leaving you all in the lurch.  I will get back on track as soon as I can.

Thanks for being patient.  If all goes well, I should have the newest comic and chapter for you in a couple of weeks.

  1. Best wishes! Hope the computer comes back working nicely!

  2. I can feel the withdrawal shakes already starting. I don’t think I can make it through the week. I CAN’T DEAL WITH IT! Aaarrgghhhhh….

Okay. I’m fine now. I think. Maybe. Maybe not.

    Where was I?

Oh, yeah. I hope they figure out what’s wrong with your computer. As long as your hard drive didn’t completely die, you should be alright. Maybe you should invest in a back-up drive; something just to hold all your files for safe keeping.

    Best regards,

    • Yeah, I feel especially bad that this happened in the middle of Father’s Shield, because I know some of you were really looking forward to the next chapter. At least we’re not stuck on a cliffhanger.

When my computer gets home, I’m definitely going to look into some better back-up systems. I’ve got the critical I’ll-be-in-trouble-with-the-IRS-if-I-lose-them documents secured, but I really ought to invest in something that can keep my AFR stuff and other fun things for me, because if there is one truth in life it is that computers will fail.

Thanks for the good wishes. We’ll get this show back on the road as soon as we can.

  4. Take your time, breathe deep, and worry not, noble sir. Your work is appreciated and your comedy welcome, and I’ve been especially enjoying My Father’s Shield – so much that it made me start writing again for the first time since college. The little details you get out of viewing such an expansive heroic world from such a small and frail angle are just breathtaking. I know it’s horrific to be without a computer – you get phantom limb syndrome not being able to follow the routines you grow used to. But it will be back, or another like it, and your fine work will continue. Like the poet said – all will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well.

    • Thank you, it’s great to hear that people like my work and are looking forward to its return.

I just heard today that my computer is fixed! Now I just have to wait for them to ship it back to me. With any luck, I’ll be up and running next week.

  5. oh! I wondered where you were, but I was hoping you’d been pulled away by something much more… pleasant. :-S There is little in life more frustrating than mechanical failure, and computer failure seems to be exceptionally infuriating. I don’t count “my computer barfed all over me and I’m trying to clean it up” as a “miss”, for whatever that’s worth. There’s just not getting it done, and then there’s “well crap, I CAN’T.” The former is a miss. The latter is not. Hope you’re back up and running soon!
