AFR #125 – What happens in phase stays in phase

“Pants” is one of those stealth funny words.  It’s not dirty or explicit.  It’s not naturally ridiculous like “chicken” or “poodle.”  It’s not overblown like “whosamading” or “flibbertigibbet.”  It’s just an ordinary word, but stick it into an otherwise innocuous discussion and you have instant funny.

(No April Foolery here, by the way, unless you want to count what Morgatha and Alaxia are doing to Gord.)

  2. I have too many Brit friends, because “pants” can be a borderline questionable word in my mind (means “underwear” in the UK). But that aside, there occasionally pops up a game where you take a line of dialogue from a film and replace one of the words with “pants”. We played it on the “V for Vendetta” message board I used to co-run and the entry that still makes me giggle whenever I see the movie:

INSPECTOR FINCH: “We’ve been through your pants…”

    • True, that’s one of the words that can get you in trouble trans-Atlantic-ly.
